AGRICULTURE

There
are 15 villages
which are close to
the city proper on
the territory of the
Municipality of
Palilula. Based on
their geographical
position these
villages can be
divided in 2 areas:
I.
The plain, in the
river basins of the
Južna Morava and
Nišava Rivers, which
is mainly
agricultural with
developed husbandry,
truck farming and
cattle breeding. The
following villages
are situated in this
area:
-
Pasi Poljana
-
Bubanj Selo
-
Gornje Međurovo
-
Donje Međurovo
-
Čokot
-
Novo Selo
-

II.
The mountainous
area, where the

berries and small
fruits and goat and
sheep breeding are
developed. In this
area are situated:
-
Donje Vlase
-
Gabrovac
-
Vukmanovo
-
Berbatovo
-
Suvi Do
Because of their
geographic position,
the type of soil,
climatic factors and
long tradition,
theses villages have
a good basis to
develop a highly
productive
agricultural
manufacture. In
addition, on the
territory of the
Municipality of
Palilula, there are
some minor and major
firms which are
engaged in
agricultural produce
processing (AD "Žitopek",
AD"Niška mlekara", "Pivara
Niš" AD, PTP, "Nikom"...).
Farming and truck
farming
In
the structure of the
agricultural soil
fund, from the
proprietary aspect,
the private property
is predominant with
over 86% of the land
in hands of private
owners. The average
estate is about 3 ha
and the plowed land
comprises around 2
ha of the estate per
domicile on the
average. Considering
the quality of the
agricultural soil,
the predominant
classes of the soil
are second, third,
fourth and fifth.
The
total of 7 395 ha of
the territory in the
Municipality of
Palilula is
comprised of the
agricultural soil, 6
648 ha of which
consists of the
cultivable soil and
747 is covered in
pastures.
Out
of the 6 648 ha of
the cultivable soil,
5 488 ha or 82,55 %
is under plowed soil
and gardens. This
fact tells us that
farming and truck
farming are
predominant in crop
production. As far
as farm crops are
concerned, the
grains which are
cultivated on 4 210
ha are predominant,
but bean and potato
cultivation has a
significant part in
crop production.
The
vegetables are
cultivated on 851
ha. The greatest
part of the
cultivated
vegetables consists
of most common
traditional species
like tomatoes,
paprika, carrots,
onions, cabbage, as
well as the
beginning of the
organic food
production.
Fruit
growing and
viticulture
On
the territory of the
Municipality of
Palilula, there are
427 ha under
orchards and 355 ha
under grapevine. As
far as the fruits
are concerned,
plums, sour cherries
and apples are most
common.
Cattle breeding
In
addition to farming,
cattle breeding is,
according to rank,
the most significant
factor for the
stabilization of the
agricultural
production on the
territory of the
Municipality of
Palilula. On the
territory of the
Municipality of
Palilula, there are
capacities which
enable real cattle
breeding development
during the following
period.
The
cattle breeding is
most common in the
plains of the
Municipality of
Palilula, and the
development of this
branch of
agriculture was
greatly contributed
to by the Swedish
Project of integral
dairy industry "The
River of Milk".
Cattle grazing
(sheep and goats) is
predominant in the
mountainous area of
the Municipality of
Palilula and goat
breeding, as a
promising but also
neglected branch of
cattle breeding, was
greatly contributed
to by the
realization of the
project of the
Municipality of
Palilula "The
development of the
goat breeding in the
mountainous area of
the Municipality of
Palilula". The
realization of the
project improved the
species structure of
the goats, adapted
the capacities and
raised the level of
goat milk production
to a higher level.
Due to all this,
there was an
increased interest
in goat breeding and
the number of goats
rose to over 800.
Organic production
When
we talk about
organic production,
the Municipality of
Palilula started to
move in a direction
which would enable
introducing new
standards in this
area. The Section
for agriculture and
business initiatives
in the Municipality
of Palilula made a
project "The
introduction of the
organic production
an the food
industry". The
implementation of
this project should
enable the
introduction of the
European standards
for quality control
in the field of food
processing and food
production. This
activity will be
continued in the
period to come with
similar project and
initiatives. The aim
is to introduce the
European standards
to this form of
agricultural
production and food
production on the
territory of
Municipality of
Palilula.
The
Municipality of
Palilula supported
the initiative to
form the Association
for organic food
"Healthy life
corner" which
gathered around 40
members from the
whole region of Niš,
and the consultant
for organic food
production with the
Ministry of
agriculture, Mrs.
Vera Apostolović
was present at the
founding Assembly.
The membership of
the Association is
constituted from
