MEETING WITH UNESCO DIRECTOR FOR THE BALKANS

03.04.2009.

PhD Engelbert Ros, director of UNESCO BRESCE in Venice, visited the participants of "Spring school of cord theory, cosmology and particles - SSSCP2009 (http://seenet-mtp.info/ssscp2009/), which takes part in Nis from April 1 to April 4 2009 at Department of Physics Science and Mathematics Faculty (PMF) in the cooperation with the Belgrade Astronomical Observatory (AOB) and local co -organizer – branch office of physicists society Serbia – Nis. Dr Ros spoke about the current and future regional cooperation. This perspective cooperation was the reason for the meeting of Palilula Municipality president with the organizers of this meeting and UNESCO regional director.

In a very cordial conversation President Novakovic introduced the distinguished guest with Palilula Municipal activities in educational institutions and associations for improving work with talented and gifted children. The president also asked for the support in the promotion of cultural life in the region, bearing in mind that Nis, as imperial city, in 2013 will be the host of celebrating the aniversary - 17 centuries of Milan Edict. Mr Novakovic also and informed about the implementation of environmental projects that have a partnership with EKOpolis net.

PnD Goran Djordjevic coordinator of SEENET-MTP networks organized for this the occasion the visit to multifunctional computer laboratory at PMF Faculty in which equipping UNESCO and Palilula Municipality took part. During this year about 60 representatives from 10 countries were included in the work of this school. The main objective of the school is raising the level of knowledge of students and young scientists in Serbia and the Balkan region through the lectures of the leading European scientists in the field of mathematics and theoretical high energy physics.

Main themes of this important meeting were: cord theory, cosmology and particle physics, in the light of the challenges that LHC accelerator in CERN place before their contemporaries. One ''workshop'' was also organized where the scientists from the region presented their latest research results and directions, as well as the round table about the regional cooperation possibilities. The school is a  part of the Network of math and theoretical physics in South-East Europe (SEENET-MTP).

Network currently consists of 14 scientific-research institutions and universities from 6 countries in the region, 14 partner institutions from Europe and America and about 160 physicists and mathematicians from the Balkans, but also from many other countries worlwide. The coordinators of the Network, since its very establishment in 2003. year, have been PhD Goran Djordjevic and PMF Faculty in Nis (as the central institution).

The work of this network are funded by United Nations Network specialized agency for Education, science and culture of the UNESCO (with its office in Venice, central office in Paris and the Institute for Theoretical Physics in Trieste), as well as other international foundations. In Serbia, the largest support network is provided by the Ministry of Science and Technology Development, Palilula Municipality – Nis and the City of Nis.
