`GABROVACKA
RIVER - OUR
RIVER`
21.03.2009.

UN
Economic
Commission for
Europe (UNECE)
and the United
Nations for
Science and
Culture
Organization
(UNESCO) are
this year
leaders in the
celebrating
World
Water Day. Theme
of this year's
global campaign
is "common water
- common
possibilites`,
with special
focus on
cross-border
waters.
On the occasion
of World
Water
Day in Crvena
Zvezda,
part of Nis and
Palilula, the
cleaning activity
of
Gabrovacka
river bed was
organized.
Despite bad
weather
conditions, the
inhabitants of
this part of the
city gathered
expressing civic
initiative to
prevent
the
pollution of
Nišava
River
confluents.
With the
motto "Gabrovačka
River
-
our
river",
within
the world
ecological
campaign "Clean
up the World -
Clean Serbia",
which
is promoted by
EKOPOLIS
net
(www.ekopolis.rs),
several dozens
of citizens,
among whom were
young,
from one of
the bridges
of Gabrovacka
River, sent the
call to the
people who live
by
the
river
banks of the
river,
city authorities
and
municipal
services
to prevent waste
disposal in the
river bed
Slavoljub
Savic,

organizers,

UN
Assembly on the
58th session
held in December
2003
declared the
period from
2005.-2015.
international
decade –
calling it
''Water for
Life''
action.
World Water Day
on March 22 was
adopted for the
beginning of the
decade
in
2005.
Water covers 70
percent of
our
planet, but
we have
only three
percent of fresh
water that could
be used for
drinking, a very
small amount of
water is
available
for
people. World
Organization
is warning
that
this
lack of water
due to pollution
or
drying the
sources
may arise as a
consequence of
excessive use of
fertilizer and
pesticides,
uncontrolled
deforestation,
water flows
diversion and
the presence of
not arranged
dumps.
Serbia has a big
problem with the
communal waste
waters
and ministries
have
introduced a
rigorous control
of polluters of
the environment.
Approximately 80
percent of
municipal waste
water in Serbia,
without any
treatment,
goes to rivers,
only 12 percent
water
is
recycled, and
the aim is that,
in the next five
years,
60 percent of
water to be
always
recycled. Water
does not know
geographical
boundaries and
political,
economic and
other obstacles.
It is the necessity
of every person,
regardless of
skin color,
religion or
nation.

these
activities.
