AUTUMN RECONSTRUCTION OF OLD NIS CEMETERY

After the works completion at the cemetery fence at the eastern side of Old Nis Cemetery, that was realized by Palilula Municipality, after the approved project by the City of Nis Administration for Economy, the autumn reconstruction and cleaning started of this whole memorial area. The workers of Public Enterprise `Gorica` started to clean the weeds that grow over the graves, but also work on cleaning wild dumps and paths. That was the motive for the president of Palilula Municipality PhD Igor Novakovic to visit this locality with his associates and Branimir Jezdimirovic, general manager of Public Enterprise `Gorica`. While visiting this memorial graveyard they met with the press and reported about the activities that had taken place in the recent months, as well for the plans for the coming year. Branimir Jezdimirovic emphasized that Memorial Park Gorica will have been completely reconstructed up to the end of 2010. The reconstruction of the whole area means the cleaning of wild plants, trees and weeds and transforming this space into park type of area, like Fortress or Memorial Park Bubanj are. Gorica will use its own resources and potentials for these works, which, after Jezdimirovic estimation means, the contribution of this communal enterprise, City of Nis and Palilula efforts to clean and reconstruct Old Cemetery. Owing to the projects and actions that Palilula Municipality that has been realized since 2008 in the cooperation with public enterprises and NGOs, this space has been taken care of seasonally so far.
Old Nis Cemetery spreads to 8 hectares and, from that surface, 3,4 hectares is deserted and neglected area. During this recent period it has been done more than in the recent decades-emphasized PhD Igor Novakovic. Unfortunately, certain people, who do not have respect for this kind of memorial place, continue to destroy graves and throw garbage. Vegetation very fast cover these graves and even newly cleaned area, so the works annually come back to the beginning all over again. With the fencing of Old Cemetery, lights installation and introduction of night guards or video watch together with regular cleaning of green surface, according to the project that we had completed previously with the Institute for protection of cultural monuments, emphasized Novakovic, all the remaining symbols and monuments will be preserved and saved from the destruction and the idea of transforming this graveyard in memorial complex will come true.
However, graves and monuments are also private property. It is very important that this action motivates the `old Nis people` descendants, who are buried in this area. After Institute for cultural monuments` protection estimation and marking any of these monuments from this place as a `historical monument`,  Palilula Municipality will take care of that monument and everything else is out of our authorizations, reminded Novakovic. It is expected that up to the end of 2012 the whole complex of Old Cemetery with the support of the City of Nis will have got totally new looks, according to president Novakovic.
