CAR FREE DAY - STOP TO CLIMATE CHANGE

Day without cars was celebrated with sport competitions, entertainment and education programme on the plateau of the River Nisava quay. The organizers of this manifestation, that gathered the children from pre-school institutions, but also the pupils form elementary schools, were City of Nis –Council for life surrounding protection, City administration for communal services, energy and  traffic, City Administration for education, culture and sports, Public company Parking service, Sports center Cair. This was all organized also in the cooperation with the municipalities Palilula, Mediana, Pantelej, Niska Banja  and other organizations and associations.
This year Car free day was dedicated to biking sport and basic objectives of this action, but also on giving stimulus to citizens to act according to sustainable development, especially following the concept of air quality protection, claming the consequences of global warming, reducing the level of noise and reducing traffic jams. `All these points will contribute to one healthier way of life and healthy life surrounding` – emphasized Sonja Popovic, president of City Council for life protection in Nis.
First spontaneous organization of Car free day started in the time of gas crisis in 1970.  In certain European cities Car free day was organized in the 90s, while first European Car free day action was organized in 1999 as pilot project of EU campaign with the title `To the city car free` . City of Nis has been together with these associations and organization the participant of international campaign Car free day from 2001.
